Kenya Boy
It was released on March 10, 1984, as the second animated film produced by Kadokawa Pictures, following Genma Taisen. It was shown at the same time as Snoopy and Charlie Brown. The original author Yamakawa himself appeared in live-action footage for the opening and final scenes. The opening scene featured illustrations flowing behind Yamakawa as he spoke, but Obayashi's world exploded with his floating body and the outlines of furniture.

The director was Obayashi Nobuhiko, a live-action director who had previously directed three Kadokawa films, and Obayashi incorporated various experimental and avant-garde techniques into commercial animated films.[18]

Obayashi also suggested that he "want to incorporate the sensibilities of amateurs," and called for public applications for animators, with Urushibara Satoshi and Hosoda Mamoru, who were still high school students at the time, passing the audition. Hosoda did not participate, but Urushibara actually participated in the drawing as an animator.[19][20] Kate is portrayed as a 12-year-old girl[21], but there is one frame in which her genitals are exposed, which was introduced in a Kadokawa special at the time as "the director's little prank". Yamakawa Wataru (Kutsuna Nobuo), who starred in the TV drama version, testified that the film was completely defeated by Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in terms of box office sales[8]. After screening, it was released on video, and then on DVD in 2003, and was reissued in 2008. Only the video is available for rental, and the DVD is not available for rental. Prior to the screening, the Kadokawa Bunko book "Scenario Boy Kenya" was published, consisting of the final script, storyboards, and stills.
