Return of the Jedi (also known as  Episode VI: Return of the Jedi) is a 1983 American epic space opera film directed by Richard Marquand. It was written by Lawrence Kasdan and George Lucas, with Lucas also serving as executive producer. It is the third film in the original  trilogy, the third to be produced, and the sixth in the Skywalker Saga. It is set one year after The Empire Strikes Back. The film stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, and Frank Oz.

The film was released in theaters on May 25, 1983, exactly six years after the release of the first film, to positive reviews.  During its original theatrical release, it grossed $374 million, making it the highest grossing film of 1983. Over the next few decades, the film has been re-released and revised several times, grossing $475 million. Two trilogies were produced after the film's release: a prequel trilogy consisting of Episode I:  Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999), Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002), and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), and a sequel trilogy consisting of The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
